Subterranean termites are translucent to creamy brown in color. They have very large heads and black mandibles. Their winged swarmers are dark brown to brownish black with brownish gray wings. Small in size running in about 1/8 to 3/8 inch in length, as their winged swarmers can be up to one inch long. They prefer to feed on wood and wood products. Living in underground colonies, they build “mud tubes” up sides of the home or through cracks in foundations to get access to wood. They are easily identifiable by their tapping sounds when disturbed, underground nests and “mud” tubes. The concerns with termites are that they literally feed on the wood they colonize, they will eat homes and structures from the inside out, causing severe damage if not identified and eliminated in time.
