North American Millipedes

The North American Millipede generally appears to be dark brown to black in color with lighter colored stripes that can appear to be pink, orange, yellow, or red, and have 2 sets of legs on each side of its body. They grow to be anywhere between 3-10 centimeters in length. They are found in moist locations, mostly living outdoors. They eat dead leaves and decaying wood products that they find. They prefer a living environment under mulch, piles of dead leaves, or under piles of grass trimmings. Millipedes also live under structures like dog houses and storage sheds. They are nocturnal creatures and have strong defense tactics to fight off predators. When they feel threatened they will roll up into a ball or excrete a foul odor.
